JOURNAL ARTICLE WRITING

Authors and prospective authors should please note that writing an article is not the same as writing a research or a project report. They differ in both form and content. While one may have, in a research report, the pleasure of an innumerable number of pages on which to write on, in article write-ups, that pleasure is explicitly truncated.

The trick to article write-up is precision and summary, although meaning and technical depth cannot and should not be sacrificed on the altar of limited space. Do not play around your point, state it as only a true academic would – direct, blunt, but factual and meaningful. Moreso never allow more than 40% of your write-up to be citations from other authors. If you must cite, (and you cannot afford not to), limit them to the most essential citations to show the authorities on whom you are basing your arguments/premises, followed by your arguments, analysis, and ideas on the point(s).

SCOPE OF OUR JOURNALS

The Isa Kaita Journal of Educational Research (IKJER), Isa Kaita Journal of Science & Technology Research (IKJSTR) and Isa Kaita Journal of Social Science Research (IKJSSR) are publications of the Isa Kaita College of Education PMB 5007 Dutsinma Katsina State, Nigeria, and funded through the Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Academic Research Journal (ARJ) intervention. The Journals are dedicated to publishing original research articles in areas of education, science and technology and the social sciences respecctively.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDE

Manuscripts submitted for publication in our journals should be original and must not have been previously published elsewhere. The editorial board considers plagiarism as a serious academic crime, and would not hesitate to sanction proven offenders.

Manuscripts to be submitted must be typed double spaced using size 12 Times New Roman Font on A4-sized papers (210 x 297mm), and must not exceed 15 pages.

Authors must ensure that manuscripts do not exceed a maximum of 30% similarity index from authentic plagiarism checkers (Turnitin, etc). Submitted manuscripts would be assessed using standard plagiarism checkers and manuscripts that exceed that limit (30% similarity index) would not be accepted for publication.

Manuscripts organization must follow the following format i.e. Title page (which must carry the title of the paper, names, affliations, addresses and emails of (all) author(s); Abstract (maximum of 150 words); Keywords (if any); Introduction; Methodology; Results; Discussion; Conclusion; Acknowledgement (if any) and References. NB: all correspondence would be through the first author’s email.

Tables, figures and plates, etc. must be prepared on separate attachments (Appendices), and numbered with Arabic numerals e.g. Plate 1, Plate 2; Table 1, Table 2; Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. All diagrams and pictures included in manuscripts are assumed to have been first prepared by the author of the containing manuscript, else their source must be duly acknowledged.

REFERENCING

The latest American Psychological Association (APA) referencing format must be followed in all manuscripts submitted for publication. Citation in the body text should be by the author’s name and the year of publication only e.g. Abdullahi (2012) where it forms part of a sentence; or (Abdullahi, 2012) where it appears at the end of a paragraph/sentence.

Where multiple authors are cited together, the order should follow an ascending year chronology followed by an alphabetic chronology of authors if published in the same year e.g. (Garba, 1999; Abubakar, 2000; Babangida, 2001; Bello, 2001 and Yargamji, 2001). The use of et al. the abbreviation for “et alii – and many others” should be restricted to the body text, all authors should however be named in the corresponding reference section (or as may be applicable in the latest APA referencing guide).

Note again that “et al.” must be italicized and the “al.” ended with a period (.), being an abbreviation for the Latin terms ‘alii’ ‘aliae’ or ‘alia’.

Although APA referencing formats change, a reference to a journal, textbook, or the proceedings of a conference should be distinguished as in the following (or in accordance with obtainable APA formats of the period), i.e.:

NB: Unless prescribed by the APA referencing system of the time, references should not be numbered, but paragraphed in alphabetic chronology (a – z)  with the first line blocked and subsequent lines indented by five letters.

Citations Sourced from the Internet/Online Resource:

If the citation is from an online journal, newsletter, or document, then it must have an author, a title and for journals and newsletters, a volume and edition number, in which case its referencing is no different from that of a journal, except for adding the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) (– a unique numeric code that uniquely identifies an electronic/online resource location) or, in the alternative, the phrase “Retrieved from [website address] on [so and so date], since online documents and resources can be reviewed, modified or withdrawn without notice e.g.

If however, the author/website manager’s name is not identifiable on the resource, then begin the reference with the title of the document, followed by the date of retrieval and the website address e.g.

If the document is a report from a private or public organization website, then the reference should be in the following format e.g.

PLEASE NOTE THAT A DOI CODE CAN SUFFICE FOR ITS CORRESPONDING WEBSITE ADDRESS AND RETRIEVAL DATE

All existing protocols for writing scientific names and names of chemical compounds must also be strictly adhered to, in all manuscripts submitted for publication in the IKJER.

Please note that charges for vetting and publication are subject to change without any prior notice. We would however endeavor to reduce these charges to the barest minimum, so as to engender wider patronage and consequently increased research and publication efforts by our colleagues in the academic arena.

Articles approved for publication after vetting, are to be re-submitted to The Managing Editor, IKJER (via email: [email protected]), after due corrections, alongside the following:

  1. A clean corrected copy of the article (bearing phone number and email address of the corresponding author)
  2. A scan copy of bank teller for the payment of the specified amount fixed as publication fees as at the time of submission, into the journal’s bank account (where applicable).

We wish to also appeal to authors, to PLEASE endeavor to proof-read their articles against typographical and grammatical errors. These errors are not only irritating but tend to disfigure the meaning and message intended to be conveyed by the author of the containing article, as well as delay the early release of IKJER volumes due mainly to the large amount of editing work unwittingly created.

Finally, please note that any article already published in IKJER, but proven to have plagiarized whole or any part thereof of another article published previously elsewhere, would be retracted, and notice to that effect published in the next volume of IKJER, in addition to any other penal measure(s), our editorial board may deem necessary.
