The College was established in 1991 by the Military Governor of the State, Colonel Yahaya John Madaki, as College of Education (Technical) Dutsin-ma, with the primary aim of addressing the shortage of Science and Technical Teachers at the NCE level at that time. In 1994, it was converted to a conventional College to make it an all-encompassing Teacher Training Institution with the major Technical Department transferred to Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic. Then, the Civilian Government of Alhaji Sa’idu Barda in 1995, renamed the College; Isa Kaita College of Education to immortalize the late, Alhaji Isa Kaita, Wazirin Katsina and onetime First Republic Minister of Education in the old Northern Region Government, for his invaluable services to Education and the Country at large.

The college ought to have taken off with a School system as per the standards of the NCCE, but due to its formative stage, size, limited infrastructure and small number of students, it sought and obtained the Commission’s approval to operate a departmental system with the hope that they will later metamorphose into fully established Schools.

The Departments back then were:

  1. Education (Education Foundation, Psychology and Curriculum)
  2. Sciences (Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Integrated Sciences)
  3. Vocational and Technical Education (Metal work, Woodwork, Building Technology, Agricultural Education, Electrical and Electronics and Physical and Health Education)
  4. Humanities (Economics, English, History, Hausa and Geography)
  5. Pre-NCE and Extra Mural Studies

In 2001, the School System was introduced with three Schools, namely; Schools of Education, Sciences and Humanities and Subsequently, two Schools of Vocational and Technical Education and that of Languages followed. For the following eight years, the College operated a fully functional school system with five Schools offering a variety of courses.

The Schools then, were:

  1. School of Education
  2. School of Sciences
  3. School of Vocational and Technical Education
  4. School of Art and Social Sciences
  5. School of Languages

The College has been blessed over the years with dedicated and hard working Governing Councils, Provosts, Management and Staff that have worked extremely hard in laying the foundation and steering the College through the years. The success recorded wouldn’t have been possible without their invaluable contributions.

THE COLLEGE NOW

Over the period of twenty six years the College has grown and expanded. From a handful of Staff and 37 students at take-off, we now have staff strength of over 400 permanent staff and over 100 casual staff. More than two hundred and forty are Academic Staff, and about half of them have higher degrees, and almost all, have recognized teaching qualifications. Therefore, the educational needs of our little over seven thousand students’ population are sufficiently catered for.

In line with the current revised minimum standard/curriculum and restricting of the Colleges of Education by National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) with the support of Teacher Development Programme (TDP) the College now, has seven Schools with twenty six departments, namely:

  1. School of Adult, Non-Formal and Special Needs Education having: Adult and Non-Formal Education and Special Needs Education departments.
  2. School of Early Childhood Care and Primary Education having: Early Childhood Care and Primary Education Departments.
  3. School of Education having; Curriculum, Education Foundation, General Studies and Psychology departments
  4. School of Secondary Education: Arts and Social Sciences, having; Economics, Geography, History, Social Studies and Islamic Studies departments.
  5. School of Secondary Education: Languages, having Arabic, English and Hausa departments.
  6. School of Secondary Education: Sciences, having Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Integrated Science, Physical and Health Education and Computer Education departments.
  7. School of Secondary Education: Vocational and Technical, having Technical Education, Agricultural Education and Home Economics departments. There is also the Centre for Continuing Education and Professional Development, now renamed; Centre for Literacy and Continuing Education which oversees the affairs of non NCE courses like the now rested Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) where we had affiliation with Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, and later with Bayero University Kano. There was also Matriculation Programme of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto that was ran for over ten years, Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE), Diploma in Computer Studies, and Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) with affiliation to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

In the past twenty three years, the College has been a non-stop factory where Quality Teachers were produced for the State and beyond; our over ten thousand graduates have formed the bedrock of providing Teachers in the State. In the same vein, through its non-NCE programmes like IJMBE and now rested Matriculation programme that were ran for many years, the College was instrumental in producing many Lecturers, Doctors, Pharmacists, Engineers, Agriculturalists, Lawyers and many other professionals that are currently manning strategic positions in the state and the country at large. As the Institution chosen for the Female Teacher Training Scholarship Scheme, (FTTSS) under the Girl Child Education Project (GEP) which is rounding up in few years, and now the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) in Katsina State, where hundreds of Girls are each year selected and funded for pursue NCE courses, Isa Kaita College has immensely contributed to the promotion and, development of Girl Education. The results have shown a significant increase in the number of female teachers trainees.
